Mob-themed spots to visit in Las Vegas - msnbc.com
A lot of the most famous mob spots in Las Vegas have been rubbed out by redevelopment over the years. The Desert Inn, my favorite hotel — it was run by Moe Dalitz, who sent skimmed money to Cleveland’s Mayfield Road Gang — was torn down in 2000 for Steve Wynn’s resort named after Steve Wynn. The Stardust, the inspiration of the 1995 movie “Casino,” was imploded in 2007 — and nothing opened in its place when the recession popped the Vegas building bubble. There are still a few places I go that evoke the mob-tinged Vegas heyday.
The Flamingo: Bugsy Siegel’s masterpiece got him shot in the head. The gangster-entrepreneur had the idea that a resort-style casino out on the road to Los Angeles would attract a higher-class clientele than the Western-themed hotels in downtown Las Vegas. Siegel lavished mob money on the project. The Flamingo opened in 1946, flopped, re-opened and became a success. Mob bosses, convinced Siegel was involved in skimming from the investment, ordered him murdered. Siegel was shot in 1947 in the Beverly Hills home of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. A plaque to Siegel can be found near the small oval pool. The hotel has some of the best remaining neon in Las Vegas. Renovated several times over, it still qualifies as the oldest hotel standing on The Strip. A longtime Hilton, it’s now part of the group that owns Caesars Palace across the street. 3555 Las Vegas Blvd. South, flamingolasvegas or 888-902-9929.
