Lagerheadz: A bar with boats, bite

    22.05.12

For some reason, Tarpon Springs bars remind me of my proximity to the sea, even while enjoying a cocktail a few miles inland. Maybe it's the automatic association between the city and its famous sponge docks, or maybe the local bars are just really direct with the maritime theme.

In the case of Lagerheadz, a new bar and grill with an Old Florida vibe, it's probably some of the former and a whole lot of the latter.

Lagerheadz opened on U.S. 19 in September, taking over the well-known spot previously occupied by Snooker's. The idea was to offer food and drink in a casual setting, with a few quirks to set it apart from the many other area bars with a common theme.

This quirkiness is apparent from the second you step inside. A small dining area with heavily lacquered wood tables and chairs frames a massive center bar in the shape of boat.

This is no half-hearted attempt at creating a theme — the 40-foot long, horseshoe-shaped bar is complete with boat hardware, a center console with glassware hanging from a T-top, and even padded captain's chairs instead of bar stools. An impressive variety of sea-turtle decorations adorn the walls — I'm guessing they're loggerheads?
