    Poker Run for Autism rolls March 23-24

    Life seemed like a storybook existence in the early years of Daniel Royer’s life. Up to the age of 4, and the youngest of three siblings, they nurtured and protected him, and he never had to ask for anything, because everyone knew. But, something wasn’t right, and it went beyond just automatically assuming family members were anticipating his every need. One of the signs that a child may have autism is the lack of speech development, and that’s when they received the news.

    “He was the youngest and had the blessing of having older siblings,” said his father, Donald Royer, a Project Independence Board member. “When we realized something was different, we had him tested and evaluated, and that’s how we found out.”

    Now 28, Daniel lives a very productive life, and he and his father will be taking part in the ninth annual Poker Run for Autism on March 23-24. There will be an open house on March 22 at Cajun Harley-Davidson in Scott, just outside of Lafayette, from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $45 per hand.
