Keno Dam: Reservoir is used to control Lake Ewauna's water level

    23.02.12

PacifiCorp built the Keno Dam in 1967, after a flood washed out the wooden Needle Dam about a mile west of the town of Keno.

The dam impounds water from Keno to Lake Ewauna, providing supplies for about one-third of Klamath Reclamation Project irrigators, said Pacific Power regional community manager Toby Freeman.

Because of its importance to agriculture, the dam will remain even if four PacifiCorp dams downriver are removed.

If a proposal to remove the four dams - part of the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement - is implemented, PacifiCorp likely would give control of Keno Dam to the Bureau of Reclamation, Freeman said.

The dam produces no power. The company had planned to build a 40-megawatt powerhouse just downstream from the dam, but it never came to fruition.

PacifiCorp operates a campground and day-use area seasonally just above the dam. Local outfitters launch rafting trips just below the dam.

It's unclear how those recreational sites would be affected if the hydroelectric dam agreement is implemented and PacifiCorp relinquishes control of the dam.
