Decision is delayed on Klamath dams removal

    20.05.12

With no authorization from Congress, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Monday that he won’t be able to meet next month’s deadline for deciding whether to remove four dams on the Klamath River in Oregon and California to help salmon and set up an agreement for sharing water between fish and farms.

Salazar said in a statement that work will continue on scientific studies, as will efforts to get authorization through Congress.

Dam removal is part of the agreements signed in the Oregon Capitol two years ago to end a century of fighting over water in the Klamath Basin. They set March 31 as the deadline for the secretary of Interior to decide whether to go ahead with dam removal, which is tentatively set to begin in 2020.

Besides laying out terms for removing the dams, which provide power for 70,000 customers of the utility Pacifi-Corp, the agreements lay out how water will be shared between irrigators and fish in times of scarcity.

A bill authorizing Salazar to make the decision, as well as spend $800 million on environmental restoration, was introduced last year in both the House and Senate, but has not received a committee hearing.
