To become really successful a startup company needs to do more than just offer a service, it needs to become part of your daily habit. Think about how you check your Facebook page every morning, during lunch and before bed (and probably a few times between too). Or how your fingers seem to intuitively put "Google" into your browser when you have an unanswerable question.

Charles Duhigg , a reporter for the New York Times and author of "The Power of Habit" spoke to us at Tech Cocktail's #Startuplife celebration at South by Southwest about how startups can grab your attention and keep it.

How can startups create habits? "Every habit is made of three parts…a cue, a routine and a habit. Most people focus on the routine and behavior, but these cues and rewards are really the way you make something into a habit.

How does gamification fit into habits? Charles gave an example of how slot machines used to be "loss leaders" for casinos. Casinos would use slot machines to get people into the casino, but lost money when people actually played. The largest slot machine company fixed this by hiring someone from SEGA video games to redesign the way the games were played. The designer added predictable and unpredictable rewards to slots to make slots more habit forming, helping profits increase by four to five times. Now every time you use slots you feel like you're getting a reward (a sound, an interesting character) even if you're losing financially.
