    Michigan officials oppose Lansing casino plans

    20.05.12 LANSING, Mich. — A proposed tribal casino in Michigan's capital city is opposed by the state's governor and attorney general, who say in a recent letter the plan is "inconsistent with state and federal law."

    The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians stood by its plans for the downtown Lansing casino Monday despite the letter last week from Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette.

    "We're familiar with their opinion, we respect it, but we disagree," said Roger Martin, a spokesman for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe. "We intend to continue to vigorously pursue what we believe is our legal right."

    The tribe plans to buy land in downtown Lansing and set up an off-reservation casino. The letter from Snyder and Schuette says they're not aware of any legal authority supporting the tribe's legal theory related to the casino.
