Hearing to focus on community improvement
Newton County Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing concerning a potential Community Improvement District (CID) located in the northwest corner of Newton County. The public hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in the commissioner’s office at the Newton County courthouse.
The commission will be open to public comment on the possibility of allowing property owners in that area to enter into a CID. The property in question is located just across from Downstream Casino, near the Kansas and Oklahoma state lines.
Marilyn Ruestman, Newton County Presiding Commissioner, said property owners plan to build a new convenience store and truck stop on the previously vacant land.
CIDs function as separate political entities, which govern and manage their improvements, actions and debts independently. The CID is, however, created by ordinance of the governing body of the municipality in which it is located, which, in this case, is the Newton County Commission.
