    Casino adds fuel to growth around BWI

    20.05.12 The 300,000-square-foot Maryland Live! casino is going up in the mall parking lot. A handful of residential, commercial and office buildings are being erected nearby.

    Construction workers are building a 15-story luxury apartment building a mile west on Arundel Mills Boulevard and a six-story office building is planned across the street.

    It’s a sign of the times in northwest Anne Arundel County, where growth between BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport and Fort George G. Meade is outpacing the rest of the county.

    “That’s where we’re seeing the most (development)” said Bob Hannon, president and CEO of Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. “You’re talking about two major installations that are literally 5 miles apart ... that are clearly influencing and driving development.”

    In the middle of that corridor is Arundel Mills mall, around which new restaurants, hotels and office buildings have sprung up over the last decade. Along with the $500 million casino, set to open in June, a 561-unit luxury apartment complex called Dorsey Ridge is being constructed across Route 100. Situated on 25 acres off Dorsey Road, the complex will have a pool, fitness center and library, among other amenities.
