    Shark fin soup still on some Sacramento-area restaurant menus

    Two months after California's ban on shark fins went into effect, bowls of the Chinese delicacy shark fin soup still are being ladled up at several Sacramento-area restaurants.

    Legally.

    Assembly Bill 376 banned the sale, trade or possession of shark fin products effective Jan 1. Companion legislation, however, allows restaurants to sell out their current stock of fins purchased before Jan 1.

    Violation of the law is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine up to $1,000.

    "Sharks fin soup is something that has been on our menu and something we serve as a way to cater to a portion of our clientele," said Michael Traum, spokesman for Cache Creek Casino Resort in Yolo County's Capay Valley. "The rules have changed … and since we're a group that plays by and respects the rules, we're going in the direction of eventually removing it from our retail menu. It's a removal process, and that process should be complete in the next few weeks."
