Blood drive at Jack London Square on Saturday aims to educate African Americans
As part of Black History Month and to promote community blood supply needs, The Blood Centers of the Pacific will host a blood drive in Jack London Square.
The event, titled "Blood History, Our History, will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is aimed at educating communities of color on the dire need for regular blood donations.
For the African American community -- where sickle-cell anemia is t prominent -- blood is in high demand.
Patients who get blood transfusions for their sickle cell -- from 15-20 transfusions a year -- need blood from African Americans so their bodies do not reject the transfusions, said Fred McFadden, diversity blood donor program specialist.
McFadden also stressed the need for people of all backgrounds to come to the event and donate blood to help their communities.
This year, to celebrate the 86 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson initiated what was then called "Negro History Week" -- which led to Black History Month -- Blood Centers of the Pacific are hoping to receive at least 86 donations.
