'College Night' serves as time to look ahead
The cafeteria at Rogers Elementary was standing room only by the time Mayor Julián Castro came in and began shaking hands, asking wide-eyed kids what they wanted to be when they grew up.
An architect, one said confidently to a smiling mayor.
It was “College Night,” an event aimed at educating parents about how they can keep their children on a path to college. The idea was hatched by Teach for America teacher Virginia Boyce , a pre-kindergarten teacher at Rogers.
She hosted the first one last year, which attracted 20 parents.
Last week, with a $2,500 Team Up Challenge seed grant from Silver and Black Give Back, the nonprofit public charity of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, Rogers' cafeteria was buzzing with close to 150 parents.
Boyce's efforts are being replicated at other schools in the San Antonio Independent School District, with at least 25 campuses hosting similar events.
“I realized what an accomplishment and what a challenge college is for families that hadn't sent their kids there before,” said Boyce, 23. “I wanted to give parents confidence so that their kids had the best chance to go to college.”
