Florida House folds on destination casinos

    20.05.12

Legislators fold on an attempt to bring destination gambling to south Florida this year.

"The destination casino bill, I would say, is effectively dead," said State Senator John Thrasher (R - St. Augustine), who has been one of the plan's most vocal opponents.

Representative Erik Fresen (R-Miami) is cashing in his chips on the plan with not much to show for it.  Strong opposition from the House Business and Community Affairs panel caused him to back down and abandon debate for 2012.

This particular plan for destination casinos has gotten a mixed bag of reviews from around the state.  Some like the idea of bringing additional revenue from tourism to the state coffers while others, like Thrasher, want to keep Florida's image of a place to go for  family-friendly vacations, not gambling.

"I'm going to turn my thoughts now to the internet cafes and see what we can do about that.  I still think that's a major problem for Florida....I frankly think these things need to be shut down.  They're proliferating, they're causing a lot of concern in communities, and in addition to that, we just received a letter last week from the Seminole tribe indicating that they have grave concerns about the impact on the compact that we entered into a number of years ago that would potentially lose $250 million to the state of Florida if these things continue."
